Misinterpreted

People in leadership positions, whether earned or wanted … or not, are always communicating. Their words, their actions and reactions, their body language, their clothing…everything presented in public is seen and interpreted. So it’s imperative to be intentional about what is communicated.

Otherwise, positive or negative, people will hear (or see) what was communicated as what was meant.

“Be impeccable with your word.” ~ Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

What’s Important…

“Look for three things in a person – intelligence, energy, and integrity. If they don’t have the last one, don’t even bother with the first two.” ~ Warren Buffet

I love this quote from one of my favorite authors on leadership. It includes two of my favorite values…integrity and energy. I define integrity as doing what you say you’re going to do and energy as doing it with some emphasis and enthusiasm!

But I would modify the first word or add to the quote, especially when talking about leaders. I’ve learned that leaders who are also intelligent about the people they work with are the most successful. Emotionally intelligent leaders who understand themselves and how their behaviors impact others are definitely worth the bother.

Blind Spot

One of the lessons I’ve learned from coaching is how easy it is to see the possible negative outcomes from the choices others are making…and how difficult it is to see when the mistake is MINE.

And that’s why the coach has a coach!

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.” ~ Al Franken

Hurtful Words

I once dated a guy who would make “jokes” at my expense. When I complained, he would defend himself and accuse me of being overly sensitive. I finally realized his behavior for what it was…abuse.

People who shrug off deliberate deceptions,
saying, “I didn’t mean it, I was only joking,”
Are worse than careless campers
who walk away from smoldering campfires.” Proverbs 26:18-19 MSG

Be Still and Listen

Our magnificently complex bodies are intricately wired to give us multiple ways of knowing what we are supposed to know and do. That gut feeling is telling you something you may be unable to articulate logically but that doesn’t mean it is false.

The dream you keep having isn’t less real because it happens when you’re asleep. The desire you have to make a difference is from God. When we listen to our inner voice, access our highest wisdom, feel our most authentic self, our choices become crystal clear.

“There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long, “I feel this is right for me, I know that this is wrong.” No teacher, preacher, parent, friend or wise man can decide what’s right for you–just listen to the voice that speaks inside.” ~ Shel Silverstein
