“I don’t expect Alabama to make the College Football Playoff Final 4 today … Congrats to the 4 teams that get the shot to play for the Championship. You earned it.” ~ An Alabama Alum

I expected that from Alabama haters or Ohio State fans…but from alleged Alabama fans … not so much.

It’s the kind of subversive thought that sabotages success and yet it’s the thought process we often unintentionally employ. We undermine our ability to get what we want with thoughts about how undeserving we are.

What if we could just want what we want with positive expectations instead of negative predictions?

“As someone thinks within himself, so he is.” ~Proverbs 23:7, ASV

A passive hope is not effective.” ~ Deepak Chopra.

I heard this and I had to think about it…isn’t hope by its definition passive? So I actually looked up the word and what I realized is that having hope is not just wanting something to happen…having hope is expecting something to happen.

In fact, hope is a lot like faith…

Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” James 2: 14-17 MSG

Freedom to Give

Have you ever received something from someone that felt like it had a string attached? It could be because the giver really didn’t want to do or give what was asked.

When we do things we don’t want to do out of a sense of obligation or even expectation of reciprocity, we sometime feel resentment. And when our expectations aren’t met and we feel some kind of way, whether we realize it or not, the recipient of our largesse feels something too…confusion.

Inhale Good Will, Exhale Resentment…
Inhale Abundance, Exhale Annoyance…

Letting go of the illusion of control doesn’t mean we can’t expect good things to happen. In fact, we SHOULD expect that a loving Father is going to provide for our needs and not fall into despair when that doesn’t happen on our timeline.

Our expectation may seem like unrealistic optimism, but when we look for and expect what God has promised, we can be confident.

“In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” Psalm 5:3 NIV
