Bring It!

Last week, yet another person I know had their book published. There was no reason for me to know he was working on anything…it was an exciting surprise! And another nudge to finish what I’ve started.

“If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” Gospel of Thomas

What Have You Done for Me, Lately?

Jalen Hurts was the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama in 32 years. For the entirety of his freshman season, the media marveled at his composure, his toughness and his leadership.

Hurts was the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, briefly a part of the Heisman discussion, and took his team to the National Championship game.

In that game against Clemsom, Hurts led what seemed to be the Championship drive…before the avenge-minded, generational talent, Deshaun Watson threw the winning touchdown with one second left in the game.

Hurts was one second away from leading his team to a National Championship as a freshman. And that failure fueled him and his team for the following season. Unfortunately, in his next Championship appearance, Hurts seemed to run out of gas. Thankfully freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was able to infuse some energy.

In the aftermath of Tua’s electrifying second half performance, the media and even some “fans” have been dismissive of Hurts. It’s as if the now sophomore leader had somehow changed and become less of what was celebrated just the year before.

I would say the opposite is true. His composure, toughness and leadership never wavered during or after the game. In this crucible moment, Hurts has elevated his leadership and demonstrated the kind of team first attitude that experts say is necessary but very seldom seen in a leader.

“…we have two good quarterbacks on our team…both of them made a great contribution to the success of the team this year…two fine young men who really respect each other and have worked hard to help each other all year long.” ~ Coach Nick Saban

Retest

The reaction to a test is often to retreat. The business we built fails so we determine we’re not cut out for entrepreneurship. The competition won the contest so we stop training. The relationship implodes so we vow to never, EVAH, as long as we’re black to be in another relationship … oh wait…that was me!

The key to not getting stuck in the story is to realize the lesson, appreciate the knowledge gained and be intentional about not choosing that particular path again. And ask for Divine help…’cause there will be another test…

These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold.” ~ 1 Peter 1: 7 NLT

Help

I’m a helper.

Whether it’s fitness or leadership or team dynamics or logistics, when I see individuals or organizations struggle, I often want to offer my expertise. But in the gym, I learned that not everyone wants to be in the correct form; as a mom, I’ve learned that even the best advice might be ignored if it’s unsolicited, and since becoming a coach, I understand that at our core, we have the answers to our issues.

So now, only when asked, I really try to focus on helping others discover their inner knowing.

To rescue people from the natural consequences of their behavior is to render them powerless.” ~ Henry Cloud
