Untethered

I had visited the University of Alabama campus many times with friends, but the first time I went to stay, my parents drove me. After that, my younger sisters and I would pack up the station wagon and make the trek to Tuscaloosa, about 2.5 hours away. There were long stretches of just trees…sometimes we wouldn’t leave in time to make the round trip in daylight…cell phones were a thing of the future…

Now my youngest sister, who was possibly 10 when she used to ride along, characterizes our trips as risky, even crazy.

Yet I don’t remember us being afraid…

Children learn to navigate risks—not through discussions or TV shows—but by actually taking risks.” ~ Tim Elmore, Growing Leaders.

Focus on YOUR Dream

Fulfilling your dream might mean you have to deny what other people might be dreaming for you in order to discover and focus on what you are dreaming for yourself.

Fulfilling your dream might mean you have to gain some knowledge or experience to develop your talent.

Fulfilling your dream might mean you have to be open to other voices yet discerning of their impact.

And any doubts you have about whether you can do what you’re dreaming are coming from a place of fear.

And the special gift of ministry you received when I laid hands on you and prayed—keep that ablaze! God doesn’t want us to be shy with his gifts, but bold and loving and sensible.” 2 Timothy 1:6-7

Shared Values

A week before I was scheduled to conduct a day of workshops for multiple leadership teams at a government agency, I was asked if I was going to laugh. The question might as well have been, “Are you going to breathe while you facilitate the workshops?”

I laugh loudly, uniquely and, as I age, with increasing frequency. But in this instance, my laugh, a reflection of my positivity, one of my strengths, was perceived as a weakness.

Trying not to laugh made for one of the longest, most exhausting, miserable experiences of my life. So I decided that in the future, I would only work with those whose values I share, one of which is, there will be laughter!

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” ~ Victor Borge
