Rooted in Fear

At the root of all of the reasons you’re not doing what you need to do is fear …
Fear that someone will say no.
Fear that the people currently in your life will no longer be in your life.
Fear that someone will feel inconvenienced or disappointed and the relationship will be damaged.
Fear that those you expect assistance from won’t offer it.
Fear that you will build it and they won’t come.
Fear that pursuing your dreams won’t sustain you.

“Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn.” ~ Marianne Williamson

Traveler

My daughter always attributes her love of travel to the nomadic life she endured (maybe retrospectively even enjoyed) as the child of a military member. And because we didn’t usually live close to relatives, summer always included several long visits in the South. She usually managed to achieve her goal of being gone all summer long!

Now, she uses the perks of working in the airline industry (of course) to fly to all the places she’s never visited. And sometimes invites me to come along. I always say YES!

Hope

A passive hope is not effective.” ~ Deepak Chopra.

I heard this and I had to think about it…isn’t hope by its definition passive? So I actually looked up the word and what I realized is that having hope is not just wanting something to happen…having hope is expecting something to happen.

In fact, hope is a lot like faith…

Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” James 2: 14-17 MSG

Aftermath

It’s been a week since the beginning of the apocalypse. I know many don’t see the election results in the same dire terns but many do; I’ve read some well-written, heartfelt pieces that have made me cry, some articulate, angry pieces that called me to action and of course, Awesomely Luvvie ‘cause she makes me howl even when she’s angry. Oh yeah, and the Joe Biden memes…much needed laughs.

But I’ve mostly been researching, reading and reflecting…and praying and planning. Because as Paul said, this is a life or death fight to the finish…

Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.” Ephesians 6: 13 – 18, The Message

Live On Purpose

Our purpose for being on this earth is to serve the greater good…a higher calling. It is our responsibility to intentionally and deliberately move toward our purpose.

We have the power to end poverty, homelessness, brutality, hunger…as well as all the “isms” infecting our world. But we often let the shear enormity of our purpose stop us from moving forward. We embrace the narrowness of what we can see, the seeming smallness of our current situation instead of the expansiveness of God’s vision for us. We allow the obstacles of our circumstances to stop us from even beginning…

“If you can link the passion you have for a specific activity with a broader purpose that gets you up every morning, that’s what’s been most helpful to me.” ~ Jim Kim President of the World Bank
