Fear

Our fear keeps us from so much that is promised to us! But if we can believe that God loves us, wants the best for us and is for us 100 percent of the time, what is there to fear?

”For God does not give us a Spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NET

Inner Truth

Healthy fear is part of our survival mechanism. Our intricately designed bodies have more than one way to notify us of danger. That gut feeling, the hair prickling on your arm or the back of your neck….it’s your body notifying you of danger that you can’t see or hear. It’s a knowing from the oldest part of our brain, the limbic system, which has no language. It’s why we often can’t articulate that feeling that says STOP.

Yet often when we have the feeling, we don’t acknowledge our own knowing. And we can’t separate the knowledge-based feeling from the fear-based feeling.

So we move forward when our knowing is screaming “You in danger, Gurl” and are paralyzed when it’s just our fear whispering …”WHO are YOU to do THAT?”

Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.” Will Smith in After Earth

Finally Faith

When I was a teenager, I used to wonder why all the really old people were so…religious. Always praying, always thanking God, always referencing the Bible. Then I got older and I realized they had probably tried going it on their own, doing it their way, relying on their power…only to fall again … to fail again …and again…

Finally, we take that first step in God’s guidance and find our lives flowing in Divine order.
Finally, we stop resisting and rest in God’s purpose
Finally…God.

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.” Jeremiah 29:11 The Message

Confidence

I’m a part of a mentoring program that did a session on courage. It was a reminder that God commands us to be courageous and gives us the reason why: God! Tweet this now!

So it led me to muse…when we think we are acting courageously, are we really being courageous or obedient? Are we being courageous or faithful? Is courage, obedience and faith all the same reaction based on our confidence in who God is?

“…because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Donʼt be afraid.” Mark 6:50 NIV

One Step…

“If I take,
Just one step,
He will do the rest…” Donald Vails

Every version of “The Hero’s Journey” story, features a scene when the hero takes one giant, scary step of faith into the unknown or battles his fear in the face of a tremendous, potentially life-ending threat. In “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, our hero is guided to a deep chasm with no visible way to get to the other side. He calls on his faith, steps out into the abyss… and on to the bridge, which magically appears underneath his foot. crusades1

That’s the kind of courage that can force us forward in the face of fear, the kind of confidence that can compel us to step into what we can’t see… the kind of conviction that we can trust what we know to be true despite evidence to the contrary.

It’s the kind of faith we’re asked to have in order to live the lives we’re called to live.

Appreciation

It is possible to have an appreciation for what others have without feeling that what we have is somehow inadequate. When we express appreciation and gratitude for what we do have, we attract more of what is promised to us.

What you focus on expands, and when you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it. Opportunities, relationships, even money flowed my way when I learned to be grateful no matter what happened in my life.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Be Grateful

God has not promised me sunshine
That’s not the way it’s going to be
But a little rain
Mixed with God’s sunshine
A little pain
Makes me appreciate the good times
Be grateful
Be grateful” ~ Walter Hawkins

In November 2016, I found myself frequently focused on the negative…the untimely death of a younger cousin, the result of the election and the racism it exposed. So I spent some time listening to the Hawkins family…Edwin, Walter, Tramaine…which led to a search for the songs I sang as a member of the Afro-American Gospel at Alabama.

Listening, I was reminded to focus on the many, many, many things I have to be so grateful for…a healthy family, friends who have done their work, time to be still and reflect, opportunities to live on purpose, a safe place to rest, more than enough to eat, faith that sustains me.

There are a couple of things I want and absolutely nothing I need…for that I am grateful.

Works

Now is not the time to grow weary, get distracted, become cynical, or loose hope. Now is the time to put into action that which you have been purposed to do….

“…You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove.” James 2: 18 The Message.

Action

“God does not place His promises in our hand, He places them within our reach, which means we have to do our part.” ~ Priscilla Shirer

You’ve heard a version of this story: Man in peril (sailboat capsized in the ocean, stuck on the side of a mountain, floodwaters rising, etc.), we’ll call him Paul, cries to God for help. Rescue comes in various forms, but Paul does not reach out to be rescued. And then he drowns or falls to his death, depending on the version of the story. When an angry Paul encounters God, he asks, “God, why didn’t you save me?” And God says, “Paul, I did MY part” …and He lists the various forms of rescue.

The point? Paul, described in at least one version of the story as faithful, did not do his part. He confidently expected God’s response to his request and his faith was justified. But he didn’t take action; he didn’t do what he needed to do to activate his faith.

I use this story for a lot of concepts … expectations, opportunities, etc. but it’s also a great illustration of the faith-activating action referred to in Ephesians.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Ephesians 6: 16

Choice

We are given free will to make our own choices.
We can choose to believe, or not…
We can choose to love, or not…
We can choose to live in and on purpose, or not.

I’ve made my choices, I’ve done my part and I’m thanking Him for all the rest.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
