Discernment

I always think of discernment as the ability to see beyond the obvious when making decisions. And yet, I don’t think discernment was even required for Americans to have made decisions last fall that would make our present more palatable.

Because it was obvious to me that a candidate who surrounded himself with white supremacists who ran the spectrum from Jeff Sessions’ “good ‘ole boy’ southern racist” to the full blown “blow it all up” beliefs of Steve Bannon, was probably not going to be a president who continued the efforts to provide healthcare to all Americans or examine why Americans make up 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of the incarcerated population…

What was required by Americans was the willingness to actually look…

Check out everything, and keep only what’s good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22, MSG

You Mad…?

A friend of mine once said he was mad at God when the choice he made didn’t work out as planned. I wondered out loud if he was mad at God…or himself for not listening to his God guidance.

People ruin their lives by their own stupidity, so why does God always get blamed?” Proverbs 19:3 MSG

True Self

I’ve seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are. It reveals who you are.” ~ Michelle Obama, FLOTUS.

It’s so interesting to me that people continue to be surprised by #45’s actions. I mean … it’s not like he appeared out of nowhere or just started demonstrating the behavior we see now. He’s been living in the public eye since the early 1980s, being his authentically racist, sexist, elitist, boorish, etc. self. He’s just being who he has always been…

When people show you who they are, believe them.” ~ Dr. Maya Angelou

Confidence

A really self-assured person once told me something I knew was wrong but he said it with such confidence, I doubted my own knowing. I verified the truth, yet he remained unconvinced. Which led me to the question…

…is it wrong to let the self-assured be wrong?

Gut Feeling

Healthy fear is part of our survival mechanism. Our intricately designed bodies have more than one way to notify us of danger. That gut feeling, the hair prickling on your arm or the back of your neck….it’s your body notifying you of danger that you can’t see or hear. It’s a knowing from the oldest part of our brain, the limbic system, which has no language. It’s why we often can’t articulate that feeling that says STOP.

The issue is NOT that we don’t have the feeling, it’s that we don’t acknowledge our own knowing. The issue is we are often unable to separate the knowledge-based feeling of danger from the fear-based feeling. And so we move forward when our knowing is screaming “You in danger, Gurl” and are paralyzed when our fear is whispering…”WHO are YOU to do THAT?”

Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.” Will Smith in After Earth. Tweet this now!

Be Still and Listen

Our magnificently complex bodies are intricately wired to give us multiple ways of knowing what we are supposed to know and do. That gut feeling is telling you something you may be unable to articulate logically but that doesn’t mean it is false. The dream you keep having isn’t less real because it happens when you’re asleep. The desire you have to make a difference is from God. When we listen to our inner voice, access our highest wisdom, feel our most authentic self, our choices become crystal clear.

“There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long, “I feel this is right for me, I know that this is wrong.” No teacher, preacher, parent, friend or wise man can decide what’s right for you–just listen to the voice that speaks inside.” ~ Shel Silverstein
