Be Here Now…

In their recent comments to the press, I’ve noticed a lot of Alabama players quoting a Nick Sabanism, “Be Where Your Feet Are.” I know it’s not a new principle from Coach Saban but I don’t recall this particular reflection being repeated as consistently by players prior to this season.

The mental discipline to let go of what just happened, good or bad, and stay in the present moment, to focus on this play, this point, this game is something I admire about the most successful athletes. The maturity to adopt this level of wisdom and incorporate it into their own value system is something I admire specifically about Nick Saban’s disciples.

My Generation

I am a late Boomer. I was a pre-teen for most of the things that shaped the older Boomers…the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Woodstock, protesting and deploying to Vietnam, putting their lives at risk as foot soldiers for the Civil Rights movement. Boomer 1 got free love…Boomer 2 got AIDS.

We started with such promise, but the Boomers have overseen the disintegration of our infrastructure, disinvestment in our education system, delayed development of our kids, decline in our world standing and deep division in our world views. We are responsible for the election of the last Boomer-in-Chief, #45, and the disaster that is his presidency.

What’s next…nuclear war?

A good life gets passed on to the grandchildren; ill-gotten wealth ends up with good people.” Proverbs 13:22

Present Moment

I am a planner. I believe the way to make a vision reality is to plan the route that makes the most sense and head in that direction. But sometimes I can get so caught up in adhering to my plan for the experience that I miss the experience!

So I’ve learned to try to keep the planning simple so I can take the time to enjoy the journey.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10: 41-42
