Joy Story!

I heard a woman from Kenya describe her upbringing in truly terrible conditions. She had endured horror after horror: hunger, rape, kidnapping, prostitution and barely escaped being trafficked. But nothing in her voice or body language suggested anger at everything she had experienced or despair over the environment she grew up in. In fact, the joy she felt at having earned a degree and finding her way to Chicago emanated from her being.

It was a powerful reminder that we are not our circumstances, we are not what we’ve been through, and we don’t have to let our experiences define us.

“Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.” Joshua 1:9, MSG

Roll Tide Roll!

When you grow up with a sports fanatic dad and then attend the University of Alabama, you almost have to know something about college football. But as much as I love the football acumen Nick Saban has infused into the storied Alabama program, what I love even more is his leadership. Occasional sideline histrionics aside, Coach Saban has inspired leadership in his organization from the coaching staff, through the alum who excel in the NFL, to the 2017-2018 team vying for a 17th National Championship.

The only thing that makes me happier than seeing Saban disciples lead SEC football programs, is hearing about a leadership decision made by the team veterans who are quick to remind wayward teammates about the “Alabama way” of doing things.

I’ll be watching my Crimson Tide tonight and looking for leadership, discipline, determination…and a win!

Roll Tide!

“The most difficult part of my job as the head coach is not designing a blitz defense that will work against an opponent; nor is it navigating the vicious world of recruiting. My toughest job? Being a leader.” ~ Nick Saban

Dignity and Respect

US Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Jay Silveria was rightfully applauded for his forceful comments against racism after racial slurs appeared on the message boards of Black cadets enrolled at the Academy Prep School.

This Air Force vet is proud he spoke out and I look forward to his words being enforced when those who know the culprits report them to authorities and when those in authority expel those responsible.

If you can’t treat someone from another race or with different color skin with dignity and respect, then you need to get out.” ~ Lt Gen Jay Silveria, US Air Force Academy Superintendent
