Checks and Balances

I believe the confusing, even contradictory behavior of soon to be former Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, has been a contributing factor to the historically low numbers of Americans who trust our government (18 percent). Maybe it was too much to expect someone who publically criticized candidate Trump to continue that criticism after the 2016 election.

But like the record number of Republicans who won’t seek re-election, he seemed to have abandoned his values to support #45’s agenda, leaving many Americans to wonder who is willing to hold this president accountable.

“Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 ASV

Our Power

I thought about the Little Rock Nine last week after it was revealed that someone had written racial slurs on the doors of Black cadets at the US Air Force Academy Prep School.

It’s been sixty years since it took federal intervention for the nine Black students to be able to physically enter Central High School, officially desegregated in 1954 by the U. S. Supreme Court. Those students endured a year of verbal and physical abuse and then lost a year after the Arkansas governor closed ALL the high schools in Little Rock rather than integrate.

Sixty years later and these Black cadets, who, like the Little Rock Nine, just want access to a quality education, were still subjected to hatred. I just don’t get it…

The power of [our] diversity comes together and makes us that much more powerful. That’s a much better idea than small thinking and horrible ideas.” ~ Lt Gen Jay Silveria, US Air Force Academy Superintendent

Innocence

When my daughter was growing up, I kept a picture of her three-year-old self next to my bed.

When I was angry with her adolescent self, it was a reminder of her core sweetness.

When I expected more than the teenage version wanted to give, it kept me from giving up.

When I’ve been frustrated with her efforts at adulting, it’s a reminder that she has the right to actions that reflect her values.

All of us are human. And in God’s eyes that makes us perfect. We’re simply, sometimes, mistaken. And God loves us anyway. Immensely. Completely. Eternally. Just as we are.” ~ Neale Donald Walsch

Lived Values

I saw a beautiful tribute to a Dad gone too soon…a father who showed how much he valued his children even in the way he looked at them….a father whose lived values impacted his daughter… who tries to make sure the “sparkle” she saw reflected in his eyes is what her children see when she looks at them.

Family Values

We all have different values.

Even in the same families, the values of each member reflect their individual experiences and might not mirror each other. As I sometimes remind my brother, he was born into family that was a lot different from my family. The last of five and the only male heir, he entered an established family over a decade after I was born to barely-out-of college twenty-somethings. From sleep-overs to after-school activities, our parents’ parenting philosophies reflected our personalities, their relaxation into their roles and, of course, impacted who we are.

The hard part, even among families, is the willingness to accept as valid those values that are different from our own without projecting our values as right and judging other’s values as wrong.
