Emotional Awareness

We can’t prevent, avoid or circumvent our emotions. Our sadness, frustration, anger, hurt, jealousy, etc., are all a part of the human experience. Our emotions are telling us something about how we are processing our experiences. We don’t have to act on them…but we must go through them to get to wholeness.

“We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.” ~ Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

Passion

When I’m helping my coaching clients discover their purpose, I frequently encourage them to keep a record of the things they get excited, emotional or enthusiastic about. Because the passion they feel can be a clue to identifying their purpose and once they find purpose, passion can help energize them on their journey.

What’s Important…

“Look for three things in a person – intelligence, energy, and integrity. If they don’t have the last one, don’t even bother with the first two.” ~ Warren Buffet

I love this quote from one of my favorite authors on leadership. It includes two of my favorite values…integrity and energy. I define integrity as doing what you say you’re going to do and energy as doing it with some emphasis and enthusiasm!

But I would modify the first word or add to the quote, especially when talking about leaders. I’ve learned that leaders who are also intelligent about the people they work with are the most successful. Emotionally intelligent leaders who understand themselves and how their behaviors impact others are definitely worth the bother.

Positive Energy

One of the first lessons I learned in the Air Force was the power of my energy to positively impact or negatively infect those around me.

It happened quite by accident when I brought the funk one day and infected everyone in my workspace. “Hmmm…why is everyone so grumpy” I wondered? The next day, I was feeling better … and so was everyone else. “Could it be…?” I pondered.

So over the next few days, I conducted a little clandestine social experiment. My hypothesis was confirmed…I was affecting the energy!” You may be thinking “Durr” but it was a Big AHA moment for me. That lesson impacted how I led then and continues to influence how I chose to present myself to the world – appropriately positive!
