More Joy Please!

One of my colleagues expressed a little guilt about all the joy she’s experiencing in her personal life when the world seems scary and unsafe for so many.

I believe the joy is what we have to focus on in these tumultuous times to stay hopeful. So embrace it, enjoy it…luxuriate in the joy in your life!

“Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.” ~ Dr. Maya Angelou

A passive hope is not effective.” ~ Deepak Chopra.

I heard this and I had to think about it…isn’t hope by its definition passive? So I actually looked up the word and what I realized is that having hope is not just wanting something to happen…having hope is expecting something to happen.

In fact, hope is a lot like faith…

Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” James 2: 14-17 MSG

Inhale Hope, Exhale Despair…
Inhale Faith, Exhale Inaction…
Inhale Expectation, Exhale Inertia…
Just Breathe

American Experiment: American Patriot

Martyr: a person who is killed or who suffers greatly for a religion, cause, etc.

President Barack Obama awards the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom to Congressman John Lewis in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, Feb. 15, 2011. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

American is a great idea, an idea executed under false pretenses, an idea maintained for some through the oppression of others. Americans who believe in the idea and who have tried to help America live up to its ideals have often been called to sacrifice their lives, even to the point of death. These martyrs are no less patriotic than those who don a uniform…

People must have the desire to get out there, to push and pull, and to never give up, to never get lost in a sea of despair, but to keep the faith.” ~ Congressman John Lewis

My Generation

I am a late Boomer. I was a pre-teen for most of the things that shaped the older Boomers…the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Woodstock, protesting and deploying to Vietnam, putting their lives at risk as foot soldiers for the Civil Rights movement. Boomer 1 got free love…Boomer 2 got AIDS.

We started with such promise, but the Boomers have overseen the disintegration of our infrastructure, disinvestment in our education system, delayed development of our kids, decline in our world standing and deep division in our world views. We are responsible for the election of the last Boomer-in-Chief, #45, and the disaster that is his presidency.

What’s next…nuclear war?

A good life gets passed on to the grandchildren; ill-gotten wealth ends up with good people.” Proverbs 13:22

Applied Experience

Our own experience is crucial to our development. The positive experiences reinforce behavior and the negative experiences teach us what not to do, if we are able to learn from them.

But it takes awareness to recognize the patterns that lead to negative outcomes and see the possibility of something different.

It takes courage to take responsibility for the choice and choose something different.

It takes hope to understand the consequence of the choice and want something different.

Inhale Courage, Exhale Status quo
