Lead Yourself First

You are a leader… even if you’re just leading yourself. Leading yourself is the most important, most difficult leadership task. Leading yourself well means being who you say you are and doing what you say you will. It requires some self-awareness and includes being disciplined, being committed and being accountable to yourself and in alignment with your purpose.

All In

I am a Jalen Hurts fan. Despite losing the starting position he owned in 2016 and 2017, the Alabama quarterback has continued to demonstrate the type of leadership experts write about but we seldom witness, especially in one so young.

He has put team first.
He has celebrated his teammates’ success even when that success overshadowed his own.
He has demonstrated integrity while ignoring the external chatter.
He has stayed the course he committed to as a high school junior.
He has fully committed to the team’s goals even if it meant sacrificing his own.

He has embodied what it means to be all in.

Inhale Commitment, Exhale Disengagement…
Inhale Integrity, Exhale Indifference…
Inhale Devotion, Exhale Disloyalty…

What’s Important…

“Look for three things in a person – intelligence, energy, and integrity. If they don’t have the last one, don’t even bother with the first two.” ~ Warren Buffet

I love this quote from one of my favorite authors on leadership. It includes two of my favorite values…integrity and energy. I define integrity as doing what you say you’re going to do and energy as doing it with some emphasis and enthusiasm!

But I would modify the first word or add to the quote, especially when talking about leaders. I’ve learned that leaders who are also intelligent about the people they work with are the most successful. Emotionally intelligent leaders who understand themselves and how their behaviors impact others are definitely worth the bother.

Inhale Integrity, Exhale Deception…
Inhale Energy, Exhale Passivity…
Inhale Emotional Intelligence, Exhale Unconsciousness…

Hurtful Words

I once dated a guy who would make “jokes” at my expense. When I complained, he would defend himself and accuse me of being overly sensitive. I finally realized his behavior for what it was…abuse.

People who shrug off deliberate deceptions,
saying, “I didn’t mean it, I was only joking,”
Are worse than careless campers
who walk away from smoldering campfires.” Proverbs 26:18-19 MSG

Inhale Honor, Exhale Dishonor…
Inhale Respect, Exhale Deception …
Inhale Integrity, Exhale Duplicity…

Everyday Values

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.” ~ Roy E. Disney.

If you say you value integrity, SHOULDN”T you be where you say you’re going to be, when you say you’re going to be there…do what you say you’re going to do, when you say you are going to do it…you know, be accountable to yourself?
